    RMS Acquires HWind Scientific

In October, RMS acquired HWind Scientific LLC (HWS), the leading hurricane data service. HWS provides real-time streaming analysis, post-landfall impact footprints, and an archive of historical wind impact products for major hurricane landfalls in the Atlantic hurricane basin dating back to 1994. The acquisition is an important step for RMS as we work with our clients and the industry to advance the understanding and management of hurricane risk, both from a models and data development point-of-view and by assisting clients on a pre- and post-event basis. Read the full announcement here.

    Blog Insights

    • European windstorms: Looking ahead to the uncertainty of this winter’s windstorm activity, Dr. Stephen Cusack, Director, Model Development, explores indicators for winter storm damage to see what may be in store for Europe.
    • South Carolina floods: Jeff Waters, Manager, Model Product Strategy, discusses the science behind the South Carolina floods, how Hurricane Joaquin only amplified an event that would have occurred regardless, and what it means for the insurance industry.

Learn more about inland flood risk with these resources from our October Risk on the Rise: Managing Inland Flood webinar:

    • Creating competitive advantage: Markus Moravek, Senior Manager, Model Product Strategy, explains how better exposure data and management systems create a competitive advantage by reducing overhead and allowing insurance companies to focus on their core businesses.

    New Enhancements on Owl

    • Download up to five documents at a time to your desktop from the "Search Results" as well as the Owl Library.
    • Quickly export known issues to Excel using the "Export" button after defining filtering criteria.

New Research: Typhoon Landfalls in the Northwest Pacific

The Northwest Pacific basin is the most active tropical cyclone basin in the world and has produced some of the most intense and costly events on record. The 2015 season has been particularly active due to the strong El Niño conditions, which affect the genesis and pathway of tropical cyclones, as explained in our newest research paper: Effects of the El Niño Southern Oscillation on Typhoon Landfalls in the Northwest Pacific.

Registration Opens November 30 for 2016 RMS CCRA Training

The RMS Certified Catastrophe Risk Analyst (CCRA) Training Program is designed to fast-track individuals with an intermediate level of catastrophe modeling experience to an advanced understanding of models and loss estimates. Participants gain a solid foundation of core concepts essential for interpreting and applying loss estimates, and they become skilled at the critical assessment of assumptions that affect catastrophe model results.

In 2016, RMS will offer two sessions of the CCRA Training Program, now in its 12th year. Registration is limited to RMS clients only. Register early as sessions fill quickly:

    • London, February 9-12; registration opens November 30
    • Hoboken, New Jersey, March 8-11; registration opens January 4
    •

2016 U.S. Workers’ Compensation Cost Severities

The 2016 U.S. Workers’ Compensation Cost Severities are now available for the RMS U.S. Earthquake Casualty Model, the RMS Probabilistic Terrorism Model, and the RMS Terrorism Scenario Model. The 2016 update reflects the incorporation of state-level regulatory changes, wage levels, and benefit provisions, as well as the latest demographic and medical claim cost data. These resources are available:

Europe Windstorm Models and RiskLink 16.0 Update

Clustering is a major source of uncertainty in modeling insurance risk from windstorms in Europe. As noted in the executive brief on Owl, a planned January release of a new, clustered view in RiskLink 16.0 is available for early access by request to clients licensing the RMS Europe Windstorm Models.
